MANUFACTURING 2
TAILWIND
A cutting edge expansion helping to accelerate the future of Air manufacturing innovation.
Nike’s IHM building expanded their 217,000 square foot facility by 140,500 square feet to increase production capacity and add needed branding and amenities.
The Air manufacturing innovation (AIR MI) facility in Beaverton, Oregon, is aptly named after Nike's legendary Tailwind shoe, the first to feature Air sole technology. The LEED certified expansion of the facility gave our team the opportunity to infuse the project with the rich heritage of Nike Air and the cultural significance of the Tailwind shoe through art installations, iconic quotes, t-shirt graphics and classic ads.

Working collaboratively with the architects and fabricators we created the custom eight foot tall “Tailwind” screen which integrates the building name into the architecture in an interesting and elevated way.
The human scale Nike goddess wings piece incorporated custom-colored air bags provided by the Air MI team to create a fun interactive moment for employees.
We created a 200’ “Better with Air” mural as a backdrop to the machinery in the manufacturing space.
The custom coffee tables in the lobby and break room were made from repurposed air bag molds.
To further commemorate the expansion and investment in the future of Nike Air, we embedded a time capsule full of past and present artifacts, to be opened in 20 years in the floor near the entrance.
